Rock climbing at Staffin yesterday-the first taste of Spring!

Good mountaineering day yesterday in fairly poor weather. The top part of the Cuillin has great snow-ice on wind scoured aspects and there are also some good cornices on varying sides of the ridge! There is still an epic amount of snow so fingers crossed for similar conditions to March last year.

Matt was over in the Cairngorms taking Jon and Nick out for a two day mountaineering skills course. We had some fairly wild weather and an interesting snowpack to deal with but covered a lot of ground and had some great views on day two. We spent day one looking at snow anchors and pitched our way up a slope. We had a windy lunch-cheese blowing out of the sandwiches! Then we descended the slope-abseiling off a bollard and then running away! Day two we set off into a blizzard but kept the faith and after a quick stop to dig holes in the snow we opted for an ascent of Fiacaill ridge. This was in fantastic nick, any exposed slopes/ridges have great rock hard snow-ice. We finished with a pleasurable round of the corrie followed by hot chocolate!

Matt was in Torridon for the last couple of days running a winter mountaineering skills course for Abacus Mountaineering. We were treated with relatively kind weather and there is a lot of snow around! We were in the back of Liathach on Day one looking at snow anchors, climbing short pitches and abseiling off bollards. Day two we took a journey onto the horns of Alligin looking at moving over more mixed ground. A nice change of venue and it was good to see that the SAIS are producing some avalanche forecasts for Torridon.

Incredible day in the Cuillin! The views, the amount of snow….unreal. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Matt attended a Scottish Avalanche Awareness course yesterday. The day was funded by the Chris Walker Trust and was for AMI and BMG members. Mark Diggins of the Scottish Avalanche Information Service provided instruction and took us through the new approach to evaluating avalanche hazard. It was an informative day out and the avalanche awareness leaflets produced by SAIS are going to be a really useful tool for winter walkers, climbers and skiers.

Matt was over in Torridon at the weekend traversing Liathach with Alastair and Martin. The morning was spectacular and the weather crept in after lunch time, we had made speedy progress over he pinnacles though so we were back in the glen before it got too stormy. The crest was in a good condition and there was a lot of snow on the north side. A grand winter day out with some lovely climbing up, down and along!
